Entertainment at this year’s Cinco de Mayo Mercado

With this year’s Cinco de Mayo Mercado quickly approaching, here’s a look at just a handful of entertainment that will be on display on May 3:

LAS COLIBRÍ or “The Hummingbirds,” have a passion for music, beauty, and girl power. These women are flying into new territory as one of the most unique ensembles of its genre by returning to the all-string instrumentation of the early 20th century mariachi tradition and the colorful, feminine costumes of the Mexican cinematic divas of the 40s and 50s. After years of achieving much success individually as instrumentalists and vocalists in various professional arenas, these women have come together to form a stringed ensemble that is like no other in it’s genre.

Yesterday’s Dream

Started in 1967, Yesterday’s Dream has shared the stage with Delaney/Bonnie & Friends, El Chicano, Brenton Wood, The Platters, The Crests, The Drifters, The Coasters and more. They play music from “back in the day” along with current music that their fans and friends, past, present and future want them to play.

Ballet Folklorico Sol de Fuego

Ballet Folklorico Sol de Fuego was established in 1995 in San Gabriel California. Ricardo Palomino, Serafin Chavelas and Anamaria Lopez-Chavelas are the founders of the organization and Anamaria remains active with Sol de Fuego to this day. With the support of Cheryl Prentice as a strong cultural advocate, Sol de Fuego was able to find a home at La Casa Community Center. Ballet Folklorico Sol de Fuego is open to everyone interested in learning to dance and the history of Mexican Folk, we only require desire, commitment and discipline.

San Gabriel Mission Marimba Ensemble

The idea of having a generation-by-generation marimba ensemble was developed in Back of the Yards, Chicago to inspire youth, keep them off the streets, and bring out a love for music. Today, we continue these goals to develop youth leadership in the parish and encourage responsibility to work together as a team, as well as be role models for the children’s choir.

Entertainment begins at 6:00 p.m. with the San Gabriel Mission Marimba Ensemble, followed by 6:30 p.m. for Ballet Folklorico Sol de Fuego, 7:00 p.m. for Las Colibri and 8:00 p.m. for Yesterday’s Dream.

Be sure to follow Cinco de Mayo on Facebook for all the latest developments, and be sure to attend on May 3 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the San Gabriel Mission District.
