Help stop illegal dumping: here’s what you need to know

If you’ve driven around San Gabriel lately, you might have noticed large furniture, electronics, mattresses and more being dumped on private and public property. This is illegal, and per our Public Works Director/City Engineer, the Public Works staff picks up hundreds of items every week to help mitigate the buildup of trash.

Since illegal dumping puts an unnecessary strain on our Public Works staff, we’re reaching out to residents to report illegal dumping and to use already-available resources to pick up large or bulky items.

Arrange a free pick-up

First, Athens Services provides free pickup of up to two items – such as furniture or an appliance – per week. Electronic waste – such as televisions – are limited to two free pickups per year, and additional pickups can be arranged for $25.00 per item. You may call them at 888.336.6100.

Alternatively, you may also bring your items to citywide cleanup events that are held several times per year. The next event is scheduled on March 3, 2018, and we’ll post more information about future cleanup events on this blog. If you have hazardous waste, call 888.CLEANLA for more information on proper disposal.

If you see something, say something

Report illegal dumping by calling Public Works at 626.308.2825 or via email at PublicWorks@sgch.org. Be sure to report the date, time and location of the incident as well as any information that may help us identify the individual. Violators can be fined $1,000 and face jail time of up to 6 months.

Do keep in mind that funds spent on addressing illegal dumping are being taken away from other important projects within the city, such as street maintenance and sidewalk repair. Help save valuable resources by taking advantage of Athens’ free pickup service, and be sure to spread the word.
